Another in the mad round of software releases is Automation, Audio Damage's newest... well... damage. From their website: "Automaton is a unique look at buffer effects, allowing you to experiment with artificial life within your DAW. With four separate effects (Stutter, Modulate, Bitcrush, and Replicate) driven by a cellular automata sequencer, Automaton is capable of adding subtle seemingly random fills and 'humanizing' effects, but if you like, you can crank the sequencer up to eleven, and watch as your DAW becomes a petri dish while Automaton makes complete hay of the track you've inserted it to." Sounds like fun! Add a six pack and you've got yourself a killer Saturday night.

D16 released a couple of new plugs in their SilverLine Collection: Decimort & Fazortan. Sound like something straight out of Harry Potter to me, but since they're from D16 they're bound to be killer. Decimort is designed to model coloring of vintage samplers while Fazortan recrates the warm sound of retro phasers. As always, demos & audio samples on the website.

LAPTOP BATTLE OCTOBER 10TH AT NECTAR 412 N. 36th St., Seattle WA 98103
The Laptop Battle has made it around the world, and now has made it back to its original stomping grounds. The NW Laptop Battle will be held at Nectar, on October 10, 2008. The showcase will star the baddest talent from Vancity to the PDX. Past NW contestants include Kris Moon, Claude Balzac, Zapan, KJ Sawka, Jacob London, Buck Nasty III, Studley Buffkins, Syzygy and Kinoko. Through the thick of wires, laptops and gadgets, each player will have 3 minutes to showcase the stuff they're made of to wow the judges and to get booties movin'. Each contestant will face nail biting elimination rounds, and eventually a winner will be crowned.
Laptop Battles started back in 2003, Zach Huntting and Kris Moon from the Fourthcity collective created an original concept to bringing people and music together. You don't have to be an established musician, nor have high-end equipment to join; people use what means they have and create what they love. A wide variety of musical sounds are welcomed. The concept has caught on and has spread from Seattle to Germany, Miami, Tokyo, New York, Italy, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, New Zealand, the UK and beyond.
The rules are simple:
1. Gear specifications:
- Contestants can use up to one (1) midi controller & one (1) soundcard.
- All gear must fit in a 2' x 2' square.
2. Battles are chosen randomly.
3. Battles are 3 minutes long. Contestants can choose whether they want a 30 second warning issued by the MC. At 3 minutes the MC will fade out the contestant's output.
4. Judges (5) decide the outcome of battles in a single elimination style.
5. Contestants must be at the location of the battle half an hour before the battle for reasons below.
- minimum amount of set-up time.
- alternates will be onsite to take the place of contestants who fail to show up on time.

Audio Damage had released Kombinat. From mild tone-shaping or adding a bit of grit to full-on total waveform destruction, Kombinat is a complete toolbox of sonic warfare. This plugin is, in our opinion, the single most annihilating effect available today.
With seven different options in each of the three distortion engines (plus pass-through), Kombinat is capable of sophisticated and unique sounds. Want to add a ring mod to the low end, a mild saturation to the mids, and a bit-reduction algorithm to the high end? No problem. Want to run your signal through three sine-warps in series? This is your box.
Kombinat's signal structure allows for a fairly broad palette of sounds, as each segment of the overall effect is a versatile tool in its own right. The Isolator is a full "DJ-style" band-killer EQ; this leads to the three distortion engines, which may be used in multi-band mode for subtle surgery, or in series mode for complete signal destruction. The engines go in to a four-pole lowpass filter of our own design, and then in to a compressor which we have configured for one-knob operation.
Taken as a whole, Kombinat is a tweaker's paradise, yet designed so that it is easy to just grab one of the 64 presets and touch it up a bit to suit the source material.

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands (May 28, 2008): FabFilter has released FabFilter Volcano 2, the successor of the popular Volcano filter effect plug-in. More filters and routings and practically unlimited modulation possibilities make FabFilter Volcano 2 much more powerful. Yet at the same time, the revolutionary new 'what-you-use-is-what-you-see' interface makes it also far easier to use.

Berlin, Germany (May 6,2008): Ableton announces the release of the Orchestral Instruments—four sampled instrument collections representing the four sections of an orchestra.
The instrument collections are available individually or as an attractively priced bundle and bring rich, authentic, symphonic sound to Ableton Live. Strings, Brass, Woodwinds and Percussion have been painstakingly recorded in a number of velocities and articulations, employing the expertise of world-class musicians, engineers and producers. The Orchestral Instruments are seamlessly integrated into the Ableton Live environment and use a technology called SmartPriming to manage system resources efficiently, providing big symphonic sound with a minimum of CPU action.
The instruments include violin, viola, cello, double bass, French horn, trombone, trumpet, tuba, flute, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, English horn, vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, crotales, glockenspiel, tubular bells, cymbals and timpani. Many instruments are provided in solo and ensemble variants and multiple articulations. Each instrument is available in a high-fidelity version for studio production and a lower-fidelity configuration for decreased overhead and instant performance.
The Orchestral Instruments were produced in partnership with SONiVOX.
